Honouring Kara: A Leader, a Trailblazer, a Community Champion

What a week it was — I’m still riding the high from celebrating Kara’s recognition at the 2025 Star Women in Grocery Awards! Kara was honoured with the Store Level award, and it felt amazing to be by her side on Thursday as we soaked in the recognition, inspiration, and joy of the moment.

The celebration itself was truly special — upbeat music from female powerhouses, engaging conversations, and a welcoming setup that created the perfect atmosphere. Attendees were treated to generous gift bags from outstanding sponsors and a beautiful breakfast to kick off the day. The keynote from Cara Keating, CEO of PepsiCo Canada, on balance and authenticity set an inspiring tone for the event.

Kara, your award is so well-deserved. You bring heart, tenacity, vision, and humility to everything you do. It was an honour to celebrate you and your impact alongside the 59 other remarkable women recognized across Canada.

From Cashier to General Manager: Kara’s Journey

Kara’s journey in grocery began early — at age 16, she worked as a cashier at her hometown AG Foods. After exploring other paths, including time in the restaurant industry, she returned to grocery retail, advancing through department manager roles and eventually into senior leadership.

One of her proudest milestones was being hired by Tḱemlúps te Secwépemc’s Business & Economic Development team (now Scwén̓wen Economic Development Corp.) to lead Sweláps Market — the community’s first independent grocery store.

Opening a brand-new store from the ground up was no small feat. Kara has emphasized that building from scratch presented unique challenges, but with the support, vision, and dedication of many, the store has become a living testament to what can be achieved when community, culture, and grocery unite.

Sweláps Market: More than a Grocery Store

Sweláps Market isn’t just another grocery store — it’s a vision brought to life. Owned and operated by Tḱemlúps te Secwépemc, Sweláps is built around principles of food security, cultural integrity, local economic development, and community connection.

The name “Sweláps,” meaning big horn sheep, pays tribute to the natural landscapes and cultural heritage of the Tḱemlúpsu’l’ucw region. The store’s logo weaves that symbolism together with the area’s mountains and rivers — a constant reminder that this store is rooted in place.

Looking Ahead

Kara’s recognition is more than an individual achievement; it highlights the strength of community-driven leadership and the power of grocery to shape healthier, more connected futures. With Kara at the helm, Sweláps Market will continue to grow as a place of nourishment, opportunity, and pride for Tḱemlúps te Secwépemc and beyond.
