Sweláps Market is proud to announce the completion of a long-awaited feature, the installation of an elevator that enhances accessibility for staff and expands employment opportunities within the store.
This addition fulfills a key part of the original vision for Sweláps Market: to create a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible workplace that reflects the values of Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc.
The project was made possible through funding from Employment and Social Development Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund, along with support from Arrow Transportation Systems through the Community Benefit Agreement established as part of our joint venture partnership. This agreement allows Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc to invest annually in projects that directly benefit the community.
While the new elevator is for staff use only, it allows Sweláps Market to hire and support employees with limited mobility, ensuring that accessibility and inclusion are built into the foundation of our operations.
“This project represents what community economic development is all about,” said Krista Stoesz, Manager of Scwén̓wen Economic Development. “It’s not just about business growth; it’s about creating opportunity, removing barriers, and ensuring everyone can take part in our shared success.”
With this milestone complete, Sweláps Market continues to serve as a model of how community-owned enterprises can combine economic impact with social inclusion — one thoughtful project at a time.
